Atari's influcence

Atari was originally founded in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney shortly after the success off the invention of the Arcade machine pong. This was there idea of trying to enter the game industry and they were seen as the main reason for the start of the Arcade industry.

The basic concept of an Arcade machine is that you insert your coin into the machine that would then activate the micro-processor and the game would begin. All arcade machines are basically the same, just a Tv screen and motherboard inside a wooden cabinet with perhaps 1 to 4 controllers sticking out of it. I personally quite like the idea due to how simple it actually it is.

In 1966 Nolan Bushnell saw Spacewars for the very first time and thought that the game had potential if it was a coin slot version so he and Ted dabney began working on a simple black and white version for a single player where they would have to shoot two UFOs. The game was a complete disaster because people found it to difficult to understand. So Nolan Bushnell and his companion left to start up there own company with the help of Al Alcorn.
During the next months Nolan Bushnell saw a demonstration of the Magnavox Odyssey and decided that he, Ted Dabney and Al Alcorn would make a version of the magnavox odyssey's tennis and name it Pong. The simple design was made from a TV from walgreens, the motherboard and the coin slot from a laundromats simplely with a milk carton. The prototype was tested in tavern and a few days after they were called to fix it, once they had opened it they realised that the only problem was the coin slot had over filled and caused it to short curcuit. They knew they had a hit

This was considered the start of the Arcade Machine Industry.
